The Story of Dad and Me

For months, I’ve been carrying around an idea that I haven’t quite been ready to start.

A book. Not about dementia. About my dear Dad.

Of course, dementia will be a part of the story. It changed the last chapter of his life and changed our family along with it. But there was so much more to Dad than a diagnosis.

I’ve hesitated because this feels different from anything I’ve written before.

It’s personal.

Some stories are easy to tell. This one is not.

But the truth is, it’s in me now. The memories, the lessons, the difficult moments, the funny ones, the things I wish I had understood sooner.

Over the past year, I’ve met and heard from so many people navigating similar journeys with aging parents. If sharing my story helps even one person feel less alone, then the effort will be worthwhile.

I don’t know exactly where the story will lead. I just know it’s time to start writing.

Tomorrow, on what would have been Dad’s birthday, I’ll begin.
