Leadership – S is for Steady

Sensible, reliable, and self-restrained.

A leader often needs to be strategic and take quick action. It’s also important to know when to take time, gain enough information, and think before acting. Being steady takes courage and commitment to know when this pace will enable decisions and actions that will work well for the long run – resulting in a foundation that can be built on for years to come. I have been fortunate to work with great teams who created architecture principles, vendor management frameworks, and design and coding standards. Each foundation took time, and then saved time for every decision that followed. Easy to say, requires strength to do every day.

Same principles apply at home. I recently had to make difficult decisions that would impact my parents’ lives. I felt pressured to move quickly to complete the decision and reduce the emotion. I knew I could make a better decision if I restrained myself, sought input, and thought through the impacts. It was difficult, but important. Do you consciously assess when to move quickly and when to be more steady?

enjoy the outcome.
