I never really know what people are dealing with at work so being generous when something goes wrong is important. I focus on clarifying communications where necessary and asking how I can help. Easy to say, requires strength to do every day.
Same principles apply at home. I recently applied for my passport renewal. Since my father is ill, I am travelling often to help him and my mom and couldn’t part with my passport for regular processing. Each person was kind and helpful as I navigated a complex process that was unfamiliar to me. In return, I asked each person I met in the line that day about their personal circumstance for also needing an emergency appointment and thanked the workers for taking care of me. A stressful day turned into one where I made many human connections.
