A leader can learn so much when surrounded by people who are not like them. I savour the moment when someone notices all my direct reports have different strengths and styles and backgrounds. The power of the collective is enhanced with the openness to truly see and hear thoughts different from our own. Easy to say, requires strength to do every day.
Same principles apply at home. One of the greatest retirement gifts I received this week was a home cooked meal of shrimp curry and naan bread. My attraction to other cultures led to a conversation about food I love when I traveled to India and a friend surprising me with a gift of curry to share with my family.
